PAHOA, Hawaii (AP) — Authorities were racing Tuesday to close off production wells at a geothermal plant threatened by a lava flow from Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island. Workers were capping the 11th and last well at the plant to prevent toxic gases from wafting out after lava entered, then stalled, on the property near one of the new volcanic vents.

Molten lava from Hawaii’s erupting Kilauea volcano crept onto the site of geothermal power plant as workers raced to shut down facilities, amid fears that deadly gases could be released. Crews worked to cap underground wells at the plant, which provides a quarter of Big Island’s power, as the molten rock destroyed a warehouse a few hundred metres away. If lava enters the wells at the Puna Geothermal Venture plant, it could trigger the uncontrollable release of noxious sulphates, officials have warned.

A senior Iranian military commander poured scorn on U.S. threats to tighten sanctions on Tuesday, saying the Islamic Republic's people would respond by punching U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in the mouth. Pompeo said on Monday Washington would impose new penalties if Tehran did not make sweeping changes, including dropping its nuclear program and pulling out of the Syrian civil war. Two weeks after President Donald Trump pulled out of an international nuclear deal with Iran, his administration has threatened to impose "the strongest sanctions in history," setting Washington and Tehran further on a course of confrontation.

By Terray Sylvester PAHOA, Hawaii (Reuters) - Lava from the erupting Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island flowed towards a geothermal power plant on Monday as workers scrambled to shut it down to prevent the uncontrollable release of toxic gases. It was the latest danger from Mount Kilauea's eruption, which geologists says is among the worst events in a century from one of the world's most active volcanoes. "We do want to shut down the wells so that we would eliminate the broader risk of uncontrolled release," of gases and steam from the plant, Hawaii Governor David Ige told reporters on Sunday.
